National Watermelon Day

by Christina on August 3, 2012

It’s National Watermelon Day! Watermelon is by far one of the most eaten fruits in my household. My husband and I don’t stand a chance eating it whenever our boys are around. We are extremely lucky that our children love fruits and vegetables but if I let them, they would live off of watermelon. Given watermelon is actually made up of 92% water, it is definitely a snack that comes with us in the cooler for any outdoor outing we go on during the spring and summer. Watermelon is also the most highly consumed melon followed by cantaloupe  then honeydew. The first watermelon harvest was found over 5,000 years ago in Egypt! Watermelons were placed at burial sights to nourish those in their afterlife.  Watermelon then spread and in the 10th century made it’s way to China which now is the top producer of watermelons in the world. The United States is the 4th producer of watermelon with only 4 states that produce mass quantities of watermelon.

Whenever you go to the farmers market or your local produce stand, make sure you take a good look at all of your options. Look for a watermelon that doesn’t have any dents, scratches, or bruises. The next best thing to do while making sure that you are picking a perfect watermelon is by the way that it sounds. When you tap your knuckle against it, a ripe watermelon will have a hollow, almost drum like sound to it.

For Memorial Day Weekend, I really wanted to have a watermelon fruit bowl. I did NOT expect for my husband to carve a shark out of it! He made the coolest Shark Watermelon Fruit Basket I’ve ever seen! You can click on the link and check out how we made it! I hope you decide to celebrate National Watermelon Day with us, and if you decide to make your own really awesome watermelon bowl, let us know! We love hearing your feedback!
