It’s National Fried Chicken Day! I have had so much fun preparing for this blog because homemade fried chicken is definitely an art. I’m not a big fan of making homemade fried chicken because it just never seemed to turn out right. Once again, I’ve put my mind to something and last night for dinner we had the BEST homemade fried chicken I think I’ve ever had! It was so juicy and succulent on the inside yet crunchy on the outside, not to mention it was packed full of flavors! It’s really not as hard as everyone thinks it is, everyone CAN cook it’s just a lot of people don’t have the confidence to. So try this homemade fried chicken recipe if you haven’t tried one of our recipes before and start preparing amazing meals in the comfort of your own home! My oldest son had a blast preparing this with us last night! Having the children involved in cooking is a great way to keep them eating healthy and learning to cook at a young age. Although homemade fried chicken isn’t healthy, we did have PLENTY of vegetables to go with it!
Homemade Fried Chicken
Homemade Fried Chicken Ingredients
- One pound of chicken
- One cup of buttermilk
- One and 3/4 cups of all purpose flour
- One teaspoon of salt
- One teaspoon of black pepper
- One teaspoon of white pepper
- One teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- One tablespoon garlic salt
- Two tablespoons smoked paprika
- Half a teaspoon of cinnamon
- 2 bay leaves
- 2 pinches of rosemary
- 2 gallon bags
- 1/2 bottle peanut oil for frying (or whichever you prefer)
Homemade Fried Chicken Directions
- Place chicken in a deep dish.
- In the cup of buttermilk add all of the spices minus the bay leaves and rosemary.
- Pour spiced buttermilk directly on to chicken.
- Place bay leaves and rosemary then cover and let refrigerate for several hours.
- After several hours, combine the same seasonings into the flour mixture in a gallon bag for an extra punch to your chicken.
- Remove chicken from buttermilk mixture and place the mixture into a gallon bag.
- Coat the soaked buttermilk with the flour mixture, then let sit on a wired rack while you are coating the rest.
- After all of the chicken has been coated, drop it into the gallon back with the original buttermilk mixture.
- Repeat the coating process and let dry for a few minutes before frying.
- Fry your homemade fried chicken for 5-8 minutes per side depending on the type of chicken you are using.
It usually takes around 15 minutes with lots of flipping to make perfect homemade fried chicken! Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it right the first time, you have to be very attentive to your food to make it delicious and this homemade fried chicken is totally worth it
