I have recently been introduced to Tex Mex Paste from Hello Fresh, and I could not get enough of it – it really is one of the most delicious sauces I have ever tried. Unfortunately, Hello Fresh Tex Mex paste cannot be purchased separately – it only goes with the Hello Fresh kit meal. So, if you do not want to buy the whole package just for the paste and spend extra $$, it is better to make your own, and I know how! So without further ado, let’s get cooking!
Tex Mex Paste Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of tomato paste
- 300 g of fire-roasted tomatoes
- 1/2 cup of chili sauce
- 1/4 cup of olive oil
- 5 teaspoons of rice vinegar
- 2 white onions, pureed
- 2 teaspoons of chili powder
- 4 teaspoons of sugar
- 4 teaspoons of salt
- 5 teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons of coriander powder
- 2 teaspoons of cumin powder
- 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons of paprika
- 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon of corn starch
- Add chili sauce into a bowl. Alternatively, you can use red chili peppers – sauce cut peppers, let them cool down, and blend them in a food processor until they turn into a paste.
- Puree 2 white onions. Peel the onions, cut them into quarters, and blend them in a food processor for 45-60 seconds. Add to the bowl with chili sauce.
- Puree fire-roasted tomatoes. Take 1 can of fire-roasted tomatoes (300 g) and blend them in a food processor for 60 seconds and add them to the bowl with chili sauce and pureed onions.
- Add rice vinegar and tomato paste into the bowl.
- Combine all dry ingredients (Chili Powder, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, cumin powder, garlic powder, paprika, dried oregano, and corn starch (do not skip the corn starch as it will help the sauce to thicken and actually turn into a paste)) in a separate bowl and mix well.
- Add dry ingredients to the bowl with chili sauce, onions, fire-roasted tomatoes, rice vinegar, and tomato paste, and stir well. Put the mixture into a pot.
- Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Let the mixture cool down and thicken.
- Store the paste in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
